Visions of Indochina is a project conceived and driven by Paul Levrier, a Director of ‘Destination Asia’ travel management company. Paul is also a recognised photographer in his own right and has spent much of the past sixteen years capturing scenes of life in these countries on camera. Visions of Indochina was formed in 1997 under the premise to photographically record the cultural richness of the region before modern development replaced its traditions and way of life. Much has changed since since the 1990′s and much continues to change. Without a detailed photographic record the ways of life in the countries of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and now Burma will be forgotten and only cherished by those that lived through them.
It is important to us, and our clients, that we project a side of the region that may not typically be understood or valued by outsiders. As with any destination in the world, we conjure up images of what we expect to see and experience based on our perceptions through media and overall exposure. These are often limited and do not reflect the sheer diversity and intricacies of an incredibly rich culture and heritage that has defined these countries for centuries.Whilst the countries of Indochina; Vietnam, Cambodia and Lao (and Burma), are recognised by visitors today as destinations to experience the ‘true’ South East Asia of old, there is still little knowledge of it’s diversity, in-depth culture and traditions apparent to outsiders, particularly from a visual standpoint.
The team at Visions of Indochina has captured this diversity, and more importantly, we endeavour to bring this across on a very personal level.
With extensive contacts and affiliations with all aspects of the travel and tourism industry in the region, knowledge of the languages, people and culture, and with twelve years in country travel experience, our photographers are able to venture into areas, places and capture moods and scenes that simply cannot be achieved by those that merely pass through under deadline or time limitations.
Our passion for life in this part of the world and our creative instinct ensures all images speak more than your average postcard photography.

The images featured in this digital library are of a professional standard and image quality. Older images (pre 2008) have been shot on Fuji Velvia 50 and Fuji Provia 100 for its high resolution rendition and sheer representation of the vibrant colours one finds in Asia.
The vast majority of images have, however, been taken with professional digital cameras (most notably the Nikon D2xs, the D3 and D3x series of professional cameras), although again only the highest quality of pixel rendition is accepted (RAW format).
Apart from minimal fine adjustments (contrast, saturation, dodge and burn etc) and cropping made to some of the images in our library no image has been manipulated to the extreme (aka heavy photoshop and HDR). The natural light and colours you see here evokes the true picture of Indochina today. It is all too easy today, with the tools at hand, to ‘over touch’ an image, resulting in a rather false and/or misleading impression of the scene. We try not to do that, believing that careful and selected enhancements are all that are required in order to project a purer picture of what was captured by the camera.
